Thomas Edison’s first great invention was the tin foil phonograph. The word phonograph was the trade name for Edison’s device which played cylinders. The date given for Edison’s completion for the first phonograph was August 12th, 1877. In 1878, Edison founded the Edison Speaking Phonograph Company to sell the new machine.
